North Park Village Nature Center
The Chicago Department of Environment's North Park Village Nature Center includes a forty-six acre nature preserve and educational facility. The Nature Center and preserve are situated within the North Park Village complex, a cluster of buildings located on approximately 155 acres of land. In the 1800's, this site consisted of a farm, some vacant land, and a landscape nursery owned by Mr. Pehr Peterson. In 1911 it was purchased by the City for the location of its Municipal Tuberculosis Sanitarium. The sanitarium closed in 1974 due to the decline in the incidence of tuberculosis and its successful treatment. Shortly thereafter, a number of community groups indicated a strong desire for preserving the property. Ultimately, forty-six acres were set aside as a nature preserve for the benefit of all Chicagoans. Chicago Park District
