Nothing tastes as good as home grown vegetables! The taste of homegrown tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and squash is what drives people to pursue the adventure of growing a vegetable garden. It is easy and inexpensive to grow something delicious in your backyard. Seeds are reasonably priced, buy them on sale but only purchase 1 packet at a time because they won't be effective if they become old.
To grow vegetables, your yard must have full sun for the majority of the day; sun and water are necessities to grow the best produce. Plant most vegetables in late May or early June; first till the soil in the planting area to make sure it is loose and crumbly, than smooth out the soil. (I use a chopstick to trowel an area the recommended depth on the seed package.) Space out the seeds without overlapping, then cover with soil; water thoroughly (to germinate the seeds) every day until your plants sprout.
The basic vegetables: tomato, cucumber, peppers, herbs are very simple to grow, so if you have space in your yard take advantage of it.
A homegrown tomato is the ultimate. Pick your tomato and when it is still warm from the sun, slice it up season with salt and pepper and just enjoy this simple taste treat. Personally tomatoes are my favorite vegetable to grow in my garden.

Herbs are mostly pest-free, low maintenance, and effortless to grow from seeds, however I have had trouble growing rosemary from seed. I bought a rosemary plant at the garden center three years ago, and it has returned to my yard every year.
Fresh herbs are great to have on hand when you are cooking. There is nothing more delicious than fresh picked basil to enhance your pasta dish.
